What if it all goes Pete Tong?

Several fears that are forever haunting my dreams are:

  • What if we HATE it?

  • What if we argue and blame each other and drift apart?

  • What if we continuously feel homesick?

  • What if we can't get used to the different culture and way of life?

I suppose that these outcomes are all possible and all risks, things no one can predict, things that could ruin the whole experience. But what are you going to do? Not go? Not venture out into the world because of fear of failure? No! Of course not!

However, I think it is possible to do a risk assessment and plan accordingly:

1. Worried about feeling lonely or secluded?

Join Facebook groups, Instagram pages and forums, to meet people before you go.

2. Worried you’ll be stuck in a part of town that has no other expats?

Do your research! Look for the young cool neighbourhoods, ask the people in the groups for advice.

3. Not sure if you’ll like the food or have nothing to do at the weekends?

Search for restaurants in the area and upcoming events that you can book in advance.

Nowadays, there is no excuse for going unprepared without any knowledge of where you’ll be living. There is so much information out there.

And finally!

Make sure you’re both on the same page, understand that there will be moments of tension, of upset and feelings of regret, but like everything, these will pass and be replaced with the possibility of adventure, exploration and excitement.

I hope I can follow my own advice!!
